Dribbling: Outside Cut and Inside Cut

Check out this short video which provides a look at the technical points for the outside cut technique and inside cut technique plus a simple ball manipulation exercise.

You can also read some more soccer coaching points for cut moves in this earlier post.

Outside Cut

With the ball just in front and between your stance:

  • Bring your dribbling foot above and alongside the ball.
  • Flex your ankle and use the outside arch of your foot.
  • Chop down on the inside of the ball, cutting it sharply out away from your body.
  • Accelerate in new direction, using good running with the ball technique.

Inside Cut

With the ball just in front and outside your stance:

  • Reach over the top of the ball – from inside to out – with your dribbling foot.
  • Flex your ankle and use the inside arch of your foot.
  • Chop down on the outside of the ball, cutting it tightly across your body.
  • Push away with the outside of your other foot, or couple with an outside cut, to maximise the distance between the ball and defender.
  • Accelerate in new direction, using good running with the ball technique.
